the denver in all of us

                                reading poetry backwards
                                gives one a sense of loss i

read yours backwards man across the sea and i
prefer to start with those lost words at the end - those labels

they inspire - perhaps it is the disconnect, the john
denver in them - which makes me wonder if he had
such thoughts - i listen to him as i grade - listen to

his songs - question my students - and all their loose
grammar and in truth - it does not matter what grade
i give or what comment i write - it only matters that

at one moment in their life before they escape my class - they pause and think

perhaps you think the same thing too - as you stand
before your classes - and wonder have you thought

at all
